The Nintendo Switch 2 is the next evolution of Nintendo’s successful hybrid gaming system, offering more power, a larger high-definition screen, and updated Joy-Con controllers. It was released on June 5, 2025, and maintains the ability to play in three modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld.
Key features
- 7.9-inch LCD screen: The console features a larger LCD screen than previous Switch models, with a 1920×1080 resolution. It supports HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz for smoother gameplay.
- Upgraded performance: Powered by a custom Nvidia processor with Ampere architecture, the Switch 2 delivers improved graphics, faster load times, and smoother frame rates for both new and compatible older games. When docked, it can output games at up to 4K resolution at 60 fps on a compatible TV.
- Magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers: The redesigned controllers now attach to the console magnetically, replacing the old rail system. They also feature a new “C” button for the “GameChat” social feature and can be used as a mouse in supported games.
- GameChat: This new social feature allows players to voice chat, share game screens, and use video chat (with a separate camera accessory) with friends who own a Switch 2.
- Larger storage: The console comes with 256 GB of internal storage, an eightfold increase from the original Switch. Storage can be expanded using new, faster microSD Express cards.
- Two USB-C ports: The Switch 2 includes a second USB-C port on top, allowing you to charge the console in tabletop mode while the bottom port is occupied.
- Backwards compatibility: The Switch 2 can play most physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, though compatibility varies for some titles.
- Improved kickstand: The adjustable, wider kickstand provides more viewing angles for tabletop play.
